Teach—don’t just criticize

Adolescence often tops parents’ list of concerns when they are asked what aspect of their child’s development they are most worried about. But much of this worry stems from widespread and distorted stereotypes that adolescents are difficult, moody and bad-tempered.

Contrary to popular belief, only a small proportion of families (between five and 10 per cent) experience a dramatic deterioration in the quality of the parentchild relationship during adolescence. Rather than treating your teen in a way that is overly cautious or harsh, your goal should be to encourage him to gradually become mature, responsible and independent. If you succeed in doing this, you will have made the most of this important time.

However, if, instead, we adhere to outdated myths and stereotypes about teenagers, you may leave your teen with the impression that she is making your life miserable. Let’s examine a few of the most common myths about teens so that we can start with a fresh perspective:
